IT’S COMPETITION TIME
Foodies Festival returns to Edinburgh with a festive season at the EICC from 24 to 26 November. It’s a cornucopia of eating ideas and gifts, well worth a visit. In fact, we have five double passes to give away. Simply email me your favourite healthy dip recipe by the end of next week (10 November).
Easy Healthy Recipe: Post-Workout Smoothie
Over the years I’ve tried hundreds of post-workout smoothie combinations. Aim for a blend of protein and carbs (for refuelling) as well as antioxidants (vitamins, basically) from fresh fruit or veg. I’ve lately got into throwing a small handful of raw sesame seeds or cashew nuts into the mix, for added minerals and protein.
Frozen blueberries keep their nutritional oomph and are cheaper than fresh, buy three bags of frozen fruit from Iceland or Farmfoods for £5. My middle freezer drawer is chock full of frozen fruit for winter smoothies.
So here’s the really simple recipe: a banana, handful of frozen mango & frozen blueberries, big dollop of natural yoghurt, small handful of raw cashews & top up with milk. Blend and enjoy!

In last month’s newsletter I featured the Your Mile Challenge for October. Put simply, it’s a website you sign up and pay a fee to take part in a named challenge. I took part in the ‘October 50 mile’ challenge – I had to log 50 miles of running with an app and submit it to receive a medal. It’s like a virtual race. Except no one is racing, and you can do it in your own time, locally. And you get a medal in the post at the end of it. Happy days.
On three runs I forgot to switch Strava on. Frustrating! I don’t usually measure runs (unless training for a specific race) as I prefer running at an easy pace with no pressure. Husband Andy is almost opposite – he was getting his kicks being the fastest person on a Strava section for the day (i.e. fastest along Portobello Promenade).
On the flipside, it was good to be accountable and it ensured I did 20km measured running a week, what I’d consider a bare minimum for me to be in reasonable running shape. I never have trouble getting the mileage in during the brighter milder months, so it was nice to have some autumnal motivation.
Your Mile run regular monthly challenges with a different fancy medal for each challenge, so if you’d like to add to your race bling haul, or need virtual motivation, you might like to give it a go. You can also walk, if you prefer.
