The new year sees a new price for off-peak sessions, going up a fiver to £40 per session from January 1. If you book in this year, you can book sessions for the old price (which has remained frozen for five years). All PT prices can be found on the website.

What on Earth is Punk Aerobics?
The rules are there are no rules. With minimal choreography, and maximal vertical movement (i.e. jumping), punk aerobics will be 35 minutes of pure fun. This is fitness for misfits, for those who aschew the conformity of a gym. We can exercise in whatever clothes we feel comfortable in… 7.30pm Tuesdays 3, 10, 17, 24, and 31 January upstairs at Leith Depot. Just turn up on the night, entry by donation with all proceeds going to the Leith Festival.
Easy Healthy Recipe: Smashed Tattie Patties
These are really easy to make, and are a delicious way to use up leftover mashed potato. Experiment with seasonings and ingredients and enjoy! We’re working our way through sacks of potatoes in store from our allotment so have been getting creative… I always leave the skin on my tatties, even when mashing.
- Approximately 500g mashed tatties (potatoes)
- 1 finely chopped leek / a couple spring onions / handful chives
- Chopped parsley, or your favourite leafy herb
- ½ small tin of sweetcorn
- 1 organic egg
- Ground pepper and sea salt to taste
- 1 Tbsp plain flour, to bind mixture
- Handful dried polenta, to coat
- Groundnut (peanut) oil to shallow fry
– Combine the first 7 ingredients in a bowl to make a batter. If it’s too sloppy, add more flour.
– With clean dry hands, form into patties.
– Sprinkle the polenta on a large plate and roll each pattie on it to coat.
– Shallow fry in hot oil, you can drain on kitchen towel after to remove excess oil.

I’ve been waiting for many years for it to be scientifically proven that exercise makes you smarter, and I’ve just come across a book of research on ‘embodied cognition’, a branch of psychology that focuses on the body feeding back to the brain, rather than the other way around. With the advent of MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) technology that can scan the brain, psychologists have been able to study the effect of exercise on neural activity.
My favourite quote of Sian Beilock’s ‘How The Body Knows Its Mind’ is in the summary; “Fitness is associated with enhanced thinking and reasoning from adolescence through older adulthood and can also enhance creativity. Being able to think about a problem in new and unusual ways is aided by a short bout of aerobic exercise. Next time you are stuck on a problem, get moving.”
There are many reasons to exercise, but improving your brain power is surely a convincing one. Need more convincing? Read the book! There are lots of interesting studies in the book – too many to mention here.

I’m an avid list-maker – it makes complex tasks much easier. For instance, what to take (and wear) on a long cold winter run?
1. Running hat / gloves: buy running-specific (extra compact) to be stuffed in a pocket once you’ve warmed up. A worthy investment or gift idea.
2. Warm water drink bottle: fill your dishwasher-safe drink bottle with hot water at the beginning of a run – it will keep your hands warm, and is easier to drink on the go than fridge cold water.
3. Two tissues: emergency loo roll
4. Lip balm stick: to prevent chapped lips.
5. Yummy snacks for runs longer than an hour: energy gels are not obligatory, although I do like Clif double espresso for the last hour of a long run. Try ‘proper food’ like Nairn’s ginger biscuits, dried fruit / nuts, Nakd raw food bars, whatever gets you through and is easy to eat / carry.
6. Phone: in case of emergency / to track run / for musical inspiration.
7. Headphones: favourite tunes can get you home at the end of a hard run.
8. Some change: bus fare in case of emergency, or to buy a hot drink if you get stuck.
9. A big ol’ hanky: for wiping sleet / icy rain off face, indestructible nose blowing device (tissues dissolve in bad weather).
10. Merino wool base layers: pants, socks, trackies, t-shirt. Pure wool = warm and happy runner.
