Fad or Fab? Massage Gun Review

Massage is an excellent way to recover from regular exercise, however it’s not always easy to get to a massage therapist. Sometimes for muscle recovery, just five minutes can help. This is where a massage gun comes in handy. The technology in rechargeable massage guns has improved markedly over the years, and you can now pick up an industry-standard device for a relatively affordable price (about the cost of 2 -3  massage sessions).

I don’t think I’m going to put any massage therapists out of business recommending this device, as personally there’s nothing as good as a sports treatment from an excellent therapist. I usually go to Robert Stone Therapeutics (I’ve been a regular of his for 18 years), or Gwen at Leith Treatments (she’s closer to me, and excellent for sports specific treatments). But Scottish Runner Owain Willaims recommended the UltraRecovery gun, he runs a lot, so I trusted his recommendation. Running is tough on the legs and massage really can help aid recovery (so you can run more).

The verdict? The UltraRecovery RePro is brilliant, you get a really deep massage, and although the device is quite heavy (a good motor I guess) it’s easy to hold in the correct position thanks to the ergonomic handle. There is also a Mini version available - It’s a ‘percussion device’ in that it gets into the muscles by pulsing the massage head attachment.

The ‘pulsing’ of the muscles helps stimulate blood flow, and therefore, healing and recovery. There are six different attachments that work effectively into different shaped-muscles. You can also adjust the speed to your comfort level, you only need to do a few minutes to feel the benefit. I don’t use it all the time, but I keep it handy as part of my evening recovery routine. It’s an invaluable tool to have to hand, I wish I had it in lockdown! I’m so glad the technology is finally here, highly recommended.
